What is Loy Krathong? Loy Krathong is a traditional festival celebrated in Thailand on the full moon night of the Twelfth Lunar Month. “Loy” means “to float”. “Krathong” is a vessel traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern day versions often use Styrofoam), decorated with elaborately folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense etc. Once the incense and candles are lit, one makes a wish as the Krathong is cast upon the water. It is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years in Thailand and we welcome you to celebrate it with us as we bring this popular festivity to Washington area!
